In the modern day factory, the notion of nipping to the stockroom to get some parts or materials is long gone. We now live in the world of Industrial Vending Machines, where a key code or fob gives users access to what they need and then automatically orders new stock when required via “the cloud”.

One of the original pioneers of this technology was US Company, Apex Supply Chain Technologies. Fast forward from the launch in 1991 and they now have automated dispensing systems spanning the globe, across industries including transportation, healthcare, retail, mining, MRO, PPE and asset management. With more than 100,000 devices deployed in more than 40 countries on 6 continents, and a client base that includes the likes of 3M, P&G and GE, Apex really are cornering the marketing in smart dispensing technology.

Effective training and recruitment are an important part of any business, but for Apex Supply Chain Technologies they form an integral aspect of their future growth plans. The European Headquarters of Apex are based in Whittington, with an additional warehousing facility in Blackpole, and the company now employ 45 people across both sites. These employees cover a wide range of positions, from project management, sales, finance and customer service through to service engineers, IT support and senior management. Being able to recruit across such a variety of roles – some with very technical requirements – can present challenges. Furthermore, engaging and developing existing staff members is a vital element to the success of a growing business.

Hewett Recruitment were appointed by Apex in early 2016 to source a new Operations Director to support the organisations growth and development. After an in depth search and selection process, Jamie Pratt was successfully identified and began in his new role August 2016. Since then Jamie’s remit has expanded further to that of VP / Director of EU Operations, whilst Hewett has successfully recruited for a number of requirements including Application Specialist, Customer Support, Technical Specialist and Field Service Engineer.

Jamie at Apex then identified that as a consequence of Apex’s rapid growth they had a number of staff that required some training in two key areas – time management and man management. Hewett Recruitment were able to refer Jamie to one of its trusted training partners, Whatwhenwhyhow Ltd, and Lucy Barkas met with Jamie on several occasions. Following the values of Hewett – building relationships and tailoring a service for individual clients – Lucy has now created a bespoke programme for Apex to address these training needs.
