What a software developer does- what is a software developer job description?

As a software developer your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing software development solutions to intricate problems
  • New feature development for arising problems and new platforms or communication methods
  • Maintenance development to ensure software solutions are up to date and secure
  • Requirements gathering to make sure the application will be fit for purpose for the users
  • Functional and user testing to make sure the program they have designed is bug free and works as it should

 

This will be achieved through software development using programming languages that fit broadly into

Object Oriented Programming: Java, C++, C#, Python, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, Perl, Object Pascal, Objective-C, Dart, Swift, Scala, Common Lisp, Smalltalk.

Functional Programming: PHP Python, Haskell, Perl 6, Erlang, Elixir, Lisp, Clojure, Kotlin, Swift, JavaScript, SequenceL, Ruby, Tcl, Scala

Procedural: Ada, RPG, Cobol

Software developers can fall into a variety of specialties such as T shaped developers (broad skill levels with depths of experience) front end developers who focus on how something looks and how users interact with applications, mainly using front end technologies such as HTML, CSS, Javascript (and associated frameworks such as Angular, Vue.js, Node.js etc) or Back End Developers who will focus on how something works, manipulates and stores data (mainly using software development languages as above and database technologies such as SQL). Typically salaries can range from £20,000 through to £100,000 plus for senior roles.
